Alcohol-related accidents increase with the holiday season
By Staff Writer
More than 65 people die on highways across the country due to alcohol-related accidents every day, according to Alcohol Information, a statistics site. Drug rehab centers can help individuals detoxify, but many people fail to seek help before they negatively impact the lives of others.
The holiday season is a time to be merry, but many individuals go overboard and consume large amounts of alcohol. New statistics from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) show that alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents are two to three times more common between Christmas and the New Year.
Approximately 40 percent of traffic fatalities occur between this period every year, according to the NIAAA. This is an increase from the 28 percent throughout the rest of December. Experts say that many drivers fail to recognize that their driving skills have been hindered before they begin to show symptoms of intoxication. Researchers warn that while caffeine may reduce the drowsiness associated with alcohol consumption, it does not improve coordination.
Nearly 50,000 cases of alcohol poisoning are reported in the U.S. every year, according to Alcohol Information. Rehabilitation facilities can provide individuals with the substance abuse help they need to come clean.
