Coping with the winter blues

By Staff Writer

For more than 20 percent of Americans, the winter blues can put more than a damper on the holiday season. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is an actual condition that can push individuals to substance abuse to cope with the depression. Rehabilitation facilities can help sufferers manage SAD and its repercussions, but there are ways individuals can make the winter easier to deal with as well.

SAD often results from a lack of sunlight and vitamin D as the days get shorter. Interior designers say that sprucing up a space can help brighten the mood, according to NBC-11 News. Switching the color of accent pieces and walls into lighter, vibrant hues can instill a happier vibe around the house. For individuals who suffer from extended bouts of depression, special lights designed to mimic sunlight can help quell the winter blues.

"You can add a real boost of vibrant color that will really bring in a positive feeling," design coordinator Julie Thielsen told the news source. "Install some pendants and chandeliers. Install table lamps, floor lamps, candlelight."

Rehabilitation facilities can help individuals who are struggling with SAD. Light therapy can also aid sufferers throughout the winter and make for a more enjoyable holiday season.
