Vivitrol showing promising results in addicts

By Staff Writer

Drug addiction costs the U.S. almost $484 billion every year, according to Drug Addiction Support, a statistics website. Rehabilitation facilities have been able to help individuals overcome their dependency on drugs, but a new injection is making headlines for its effectiveness against addiction.

Vivitrol is becoming a mainstream form of treatment for addicts attempting to detoxify, according to WABC-TV. Robert Halk, a former heroin user, is one example of an individual who has turned to Vivitrol to kick his addiction. Halk had used heroin for 30 years before seeking treatment at the New York State Psychiatric Institute.

"Every day is the same," Halk told the news source. "Hustle up money to pay for a habit just to get your life going in the morning. The thing is you don't see a way out."

The former heroin user has been taking shots of Vivitrol for three months now, which has effectively helped kill off his cravings for heroin. Experts say that Vivitrol is helping more individuals like Halk stay on the road to recovery by blocking narcotic receptors in the brain.

Rehabilitation facilities can help individuals struggling with addiction. Vivitrol may be administered to patients suffering from narcotic or methamphetamine dependency.
