Anxiety can lead individuals to turn to substance abuse as a coping mechanism. A packed to-do list can overwhelm people over the holidays, according to the Beloit Daily News. The winter blues, also known as seasonal affective disorder, affects nearly 20 percent of the population. To avoid feeling down during the holidays, experts recommend exercising and getting enough sleep. This can alleviate any stress.
